I'm a fan of the California State University system. I really am. I think it's cheaper than any other state's college program, and I think it offers a wide range of colleges in a wide range of areas so that it gives almost everyone an opportunity to go to college. What I am not a fan of is the budget.
First of all, it takes the California legislature about 7 months to actually DO the budget. They sit there arguing for seven months, and in the end the things that end up getting cut are things we actually need, such as funding for elementary schools or highway roadwork, and the things that get more money are things that don't effect 99% of the population, such as prisons. Secondly, SEVEN MONTHS?! REALLY?! I mean, next time they should just hire me to come in and look at the budget and do it for them. I could get it done in about a half an hour, and then the money would be going to places that need it.
One of the things that got cut this year was funding to state colleges. Most colleges managed to get around this by raising tuition rates, but one college in particular--the one I was planning on transferring to--did something a little different. They decided to only accept incoming students for Fall of 2010 if they were incoming freshman (which I am not) or if they were upper division transfers (which I am). So I was very excited, and on the day that I was allowed to apply, I go and choose my major, and then the computer tells me I can't apply. I was very confused, so I try it again. And then I found it out: this college was only accepting upper division transfers if they were NOT English Majors. WTF?!
Anyway, it all works out in the end, because now I'm applying to the UC system, which is a better set of colleges anyway. But the point of the matter still stands, funding for colleges should NOT be cut. Funding for elementary schools should NOT be cut. In fact, funding for anything that has any amount of impact on anyone in the state, SHOULD NOT BE CUT.
Now if the damn politicians would actually read this journal, they might get something done.

Happiness is always a by-product. [...] But it is not something that can be demanded from life, and if you are not happy you had better stop worrying about it and see what treasures you can pluck from your own brand of unhappiness.
